The first Inverter driven split self install air conditioner unit system that is capable of full self installation.
The MFA18 has 20000 BTU/hr split wall mounted inverter driven air conditioner with heat pump. This wall mounted split self install air conditioner unit comes with a pre-charged 6 metre connector pipe.
This self install air conditioner is capable of being installed by any competent 'diy-er' or contractor in typically about 2-3 hours. There are basically two parts - the indoor unit whcih mounts high up on the wall and the outdoor (condensor) unit which stands outside. The two are connected by an umbilical chord that carries the refrigerent back and forth as well the power for the outside unit. The umbilcal is permanentally attached to the back of the indoor unit and is coupled to the outdoor unit using a quick coupling system that ensures no gas escapes (and an electrical multiway connector for the power)
So - to install these units is quite simple. Mount the indoor unit onto the wall using the wall plate provided. Make a hole though the wall to outside (this needs to be about 100mm diameter - enough to pass the quick coupling connector at the end of the umbilical through - the umbilical itself is smaller than this - typically about 75 x 50 mm). The outdoor unit is then connected outside to the umbilical for both refrigerent and power. All you need to do then is wire up the indoor unit to a plug and the system is ready to turn on. The outdoor unit is supplied as standard with rubber feet to stand on a flat surface. You can optionally buy a wall bracket for the outdoor unit (see related items below) should you wish to mount the unit up on the wall.

INVERTER THEORY - Why is it better?
An inverter air conditioner is more efficient in saving energy and gives better temperature control. It's compressor motor is driven by direct current ( a current inverter is installed in the unit - hence the name) and its speed is variable. The inverter regulates the temperature by speeding up or slowing down the rpm of the compressor according to demand. When the desired room temperature is reached, the compressor motor will run at a constant medium speed.
A conventional air conditioner regulates temperature simply by turning the compressor on and off. Teh compressor can only run at one speed - full speed so draws full power all the time it is running. The start up process consumes 3 times more electricity and the room temperature canl also fluctuate more as the unit cannot provide a varaible level of output.
Inverter technology is definitely the way forward in efficiency terms.
WHY BUY A QUICK COUPLING SYSTEM?
The unit above is a sealed precharged system so are LEGAL for unqualified people to install themselves. In the UK it is ILLEGAL to self-install systems where you bend your own copper pipe and fill them with refrigerent simply by opening service valves on the units and bleeding the air to atmosphere.Venting of refrigerent gases to the atmosphere is illegal. Open pipe systems BY LAW have to be installed by an approved refrigeration contractor (the equivalent of CORGI Gas approval) using specialised equipment that evacuates the pipework and then charges the system using self contained gas exchange units. Our sealed umbilical systems do not vent gas in any way and are therefore quite safe and legal to install yourself.
